HOW HAVE THE SQUAD RESPONDED THIS WEEK?
The challenge for the coaches is to provide solutions to the problem areas and we have spoken about focus areas this week and moving forward. There is no doubt we will be tested on Friday down at Stradey Park. Playing against Llanelli, a side full of internationals, will be great preparation for our European games and for our next four games in the Guinness Premiership as Leicester, Bath, Sale and Wasps all have their fair share of Test stars when we play them. These are the games that players love to play in and obviously from my point of view I am looking forward to catching up with Phil Davies.
There is no one more aware than me of the contribution Phil has made to the growth and evolution of the Leeds Carnegie team over the last 10 years. He has had huge influence on me personally and without a doubt I would not be where I am today without him. That said we don't expect any favours and we will all be looking forward to the trip and testing ourselves at the highest level.
HOW HAVE PREPARATIONS GONE THIS WEEK?
The week has gone well, particularly with the 'A' team winning so well at Leicester. The result has given the squad a huge lift and demonstrates the strength in depth we now have. This depth has been tested again with the news about Richard Welding's cartilage operation coupled with shoulder surgery for Kearnan Myall and Rob Rawlinson. All three players have been battling through the last three weeks and were breaking down more and more often. There is never a good time for these operations but the gap between the Guinness Premiership programme should give us as much time as possible to try and get them back fit for the next batch of league games.
WILL YOU MAKE ANY CHANGES THIS WEEK?
Changes this week involve the return of Martin Schusterman which allows me to give Calum Clark a well earned rest. Colin Noon, Stuart Hooper and Mark Lock all come back into the side fresh again allowing me to rest Rhys Oakley who is carrying one or two knocks and Mike MacDonald who is still struggling with the rib injury he picked up in the World Cup.
Pablo Bouza also will get the chance having trained and played consistently well recently. In the backs Joe Bedford hasn't quite recovered from his concussion against Bristol and Darren Edwards gets an opportunity with Jonny Hepworth coming back in having impressed on Monday in the win at Leicester.
PUMA RETURNS FOR LEEDS CARNEGIE
Argentinean back rower Martin Schusterman will make his return to the Leeds Carnegie team this Friday at Llanelli after being part of the Pumas historic squad at the World Cup in France.
Schusterman, who has been capped 17 times for Argentina, was an ever present last season for Leeds in the Championship winning season, only missing out on four games due to international selection. He made his return for Leeds in their Guinness A League win at Leicester on Monday night and has now been drafted into the first team for the EDF Energy Cup clash with the Scarlets.
He is one of eight changes to the side that lost to Saracens in the first pool game last Friday night at Headingley Carnegie.
In the backs Appo Satala, who scored a try on his debut last week, swaps wings to accommodate the return of Tom Biggs for Leigh Hinton. Jonny Hepworth replaces Tom Rock in the centres whilst Darren Edwards, who won the Powergen Cup with his former club London Irish, replaces James Brooks at scrum half.
In the forwards Fosi Pala'amo reverts to loose head enabling Colin Noon to return at tight head prop in place of Mike MacDonald and there is a new look second row with captain Stuart Hooper returning alongside the vastly experienced Pablo Bouza, who has 38 caps for Argentina.
His fellow international team mate, Schusterman, replaces Calum Clark in the back row whilst Mark Lock comes in for Rhys Oakley at number eight.
Of the 22 man squad only Tom Biggs and Stuart Hooper were regular first team players during Phil Davies reign at Headingley Carnegie however Danny Paul and Tommy McGee both also made the debut during the Welshman's time in charge of Leeds.
The team in full is:
15. Jon Goodridge 14. Appo Satala 13. Jonny Hepworth 12. Andy Tuilagi 11. Tom Biggs 10. Alberto Di Bernardo 9. Darren Edwards
