Bath head coach Steve Meehan paid tribute to both side's attacking intent after a 20-14 win over EDF Energy Cup holders Leicester at The Rec.
Leicester controlled the game for long periods but the game turned on an opportunist try by centre Alex Crockett on 68 minutes.

Bath were also awarded a penalty try just before the break while Leicester full-back Sam Vesty crossed for their try earlier in the first half.

But Meehan was pleased with the quality of attacking rugby on display.

He said: ``I must admit I was surprised at time at the willingness of players to throw the ball around, given the conditions,'' said Meehan.

``There were some marvellous phases of play. It's great to see people playing with freedom.''

However the victorious coach was not entirely satisfied with his side's performance, adding: ``We did not play as well today as we have been playing.''

Meehan did, however, exempt from any criticism former England prop David Flatman who played a full 80 minutes for the first time since returning from long-term injury. ``He's a very popular member of the squad and he's done more than he's ever been asked to do,'' said Meehan.

Meehan also confirmed that England reserve hooker Lee Mears was likely to be involved in Bath's next cup tie away to Sale next Friday night.

Leicester coach Richard Cockerill saw his young pack concede a penalty try at a scrum just before half-time but defended his callow front three.

``Dan Cole and Dave Young are very young props and stuck to their task manfully. These guys will learn and that Bath front five was pretty much their first choice so I thought our lads stood up pretty well.

``It showed the strength we've got in the club and will only get better when our World Cup guys turn up.''
